What is Our Mission in this Life?

Pause for thought! Especially after the horrendous attack on New York City, Washington and Pennsylvania. Four planes -- with all those dear people aboard -- used so tragically to pull off such an atrocity. I think a lot of people have had pause to think about that question. And even more so, in the aftermath, with all the stories abounding as a result of it.

One of these stories -- one of many that touched my heart so deeply -- caught my attention, as it unfolded, about three people: a man who was confined to a wheelchair, his assistant (a young woman with a family), and a special hero. They were trapped on one of the higher floors of the World Trade Center, in a room along with other people. The hero was a gentleman (and I use that word literally) who had survived the first attack on the World Trade Center when the subway was bombed.  I wish I knew his name so that I could honor him, but, unfortunately, the story passed too quickly for me to grasp it.

This brave man knew that the young woman would never escape in time trying to get the handicapped gentlemen out as well, so he calmly told her to flee with the others, and that he would take care of her "charge;" that he would get him out as best he could. She survived. The two men left behind did not. Miraculously, they did manage, however, to contact their loved ones by phone so that they could say goodbye. If not for this brave man, the handicapped man would never have been able to do that. And certain children would have been left behind without their young mother.

So, why did that man survive the first time, but not the second? Was his mission in this life to be there for a very frightened man trapped in a wheelchair, to talk him through the last minutes of their lives together, to give him peace at the time he most needed it? I am willing to bet it was, but only he knows for sure. I believe he actually "knew" what his mission was supposed to be when he entered this life. This is the contract that we all make with our God and our angel guides before we come here, and is information that is contained within each of us. It is what we call our Soul Knowledge. Some of us discover what it is, by realizing somewhere along our life's path that we have made a substantial difference in someone else's life, and some discover it at the very end of their lives - possibly, like this dear man.

But it is also true that this is something that we have to remember consciously. The very second that man realized that it was too late to escape, it's very possible that he realized what his true mission was, and that made his personal sacrifice much easier for him. But the individual timeframe for this is as drastically different as there are as many people in this world. We do all get to find out eventually -- even if it takes us the length of time it takes to reach the other side, where all is remembered. And, it is in the "remembering" that we find our peace.

Have you made a difference in someone else's life?

Our mission does not have to be an outstanding mission where everyone gets to hear about it. It can be as simple as taking someone's hand and showing genuine concern. If you have done that, did you ever get to find out that this one simple act changed that person's life? Probably not. Even the children who leave this life earlier than expected have a mission. Can you think of one child who has not made an impact on you? I can't!

But even that isn't the point. Your mission in this life is as personal and as private as anything can be, and it is yours and yours alone. It doesn't matter if you know about it right now. You will, when you need to. The important thing is that you follow your heart, and if you do that, you will remember -- when you are supposed to remember. I promise. For there is a reason why we say, "Love conquers all." It is Universal law that all things created were created with Love - equally.

So, it stands to reason that your Mission will succeed when love is the motivation, even if you aren't sure what it is at the moment. For Love is the Mission. And the Mission is Love.

With a special prayer for each of you, for all those whose Missions were accomplished, and for God's blessings and peace in our world.    Love and Light,
